This 3-day training program on Water Efficient Sanitation Systems (WESS) is designed for key professionals involved in sanitation planning and implementation at the municipal level in South Africa.

This training directly supports South Africa’s commitment to achieving universal access to safe and hygienic sanitation by 2030, contributing to improved public health, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability.

Water Efficient Sanitation Solutions (WESS) are systems which require low to no water, are completely decentralized and utilize technologies that include beneficial use of waste products. WESS offer cost-effective, water-saving, and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional centralized sewer systems, particularly valuable in water-scarce regions and areas with limited infrastructure.

The participants of the trainings will be staff from the selected WSAs, private consultants and local developers.

The purpose of this training is to empower participants to develop practical, sustainable WESS implementation plans, equipping them with the skills to integrate WESS into municipal frameworks, develop strong business cases and funding proposals, engage communities effectively, and navigate the procurement process.
Each WSA will bring a multidisciplinary team of 3-4 people that will work together with a consultant and a local developer on a WESS implementation concept note for a real case.
This will be an IN-PERSON training with no option to join online as it is crucial to the training that all attendees are present in person for the 3-days, as the training will be very practical, including not only presentations, but also practical exercises and field visits.
